Burundi is a small, landlocked country with a surface area of 27,830 km2 and 10.8 million inhabitants in 2017. It is one of the poorest countries in the world with a poverty rate of 74.7%. It is also the second most densely populated country in Africa with 470 inhabitants per square kilometer. Burundi’s economy is heavily reliant on the agricultural sector, which, despite the paucity of arable land, employs 80% of the population. Poverty overwhelmingly affects small rural farmers.

The best time to visit Burundi is from january until december, when you will have a pleasant or warm temperature and limited till mediocre rainfall. The highest average temperature in Burundi is 31°C in january and the lowest is 22°C in june.

Lake Kivu lies just a few hours from Kigali by bus. It makes for a great overnight or weekend trip. The lake would also be a convenient stopover for those traveling to visit Virunga National Park in DR Congo. You could easily make a small detour before traveling on to cross the border at Goma. How to Get to Bujumbura by Air

The international airport is about 11kms from the capital Bujumbura and is maintained well enough to cater to most of your needs. Taxis are available from the airport to the city. Air travel to Burundi is inexpensive with direct flights from France, Ethiopia, Cameroon, Congo and Kenya. Charter flights are available at very cheap rates from Bujumbura to Kigali and Cyangugu only. There are no other means of flying from any other part of Burundi to Bujumbura.

How to Get to Bujumbura by Bus

It is possible to drive to Bujumbura from either the north or the south of Democratic Republic of Congo. The road from Rwanda to Bujumbura is also passable but from Tanzania, it is poor. Because of the ongoing ethnic clash, visitors should note that border entry points are sometimes closed.
